All completed stories relating to Highlander are welcome, with a few caveats. Whether your story only uses the same concept of immortality as Highlander with non-canon characters, a passing mention of one of the movie or TV characters, or a full blown epic concerning your favorite immortal from the TV shows or movies, your story is welcome. Again, stories must be complete (writers with a story in progress should submit their stories to the WIP branch run by Frank), but they can be part of an incomplete series. This site is intended to be all inclusive for Highlander fan fiction, the archivist's personal reading preferences are not a factor. However, no living real person is to be used as a character. No actors from the shows or movies are to be included as characters in fanfic works included here. Yes, you can use Plato as a character, or have Methos and Duncan compare the current President's foibles to the previous one, but please don't use your ex-best friend as the archvillian, and do not (shudders) have the current President as a character in the story. Real life is great inspiration for fiction, but avoiding hurt feelings and libel lawsuits is best for all.
X-Over and Slash stories be need to marked as such. Warnings of content that may be offensive to some readers (such as Character Death, BDSM, religious figures not being holy, harsh language) is a good idea. Warning readers of characters wearing white shoes after Labor Day would be a bit much. ;-) Telling readers who is involved with who (pairings) can be a good idea, if it is not a spoiler for the story. In any case, if you need guidance e-mail the archivist after reading this page.
All stories are stored on site as text files. It makes upkeep of this site simpler. No dead links suddenly appear after a story has been up for years. . In addition hard drives crash, free websites kick off sites, well meaning friends and family delete files - keeping a copy of the story here insures it won't accidentally disappear. Most stories are stored as single files, to make it easier to download an entire story for those readers who have limited access to the web.
If you do not want to have your story included, please consider submitting the url of your site for the links page. If you have an issue with some aspect of the site, contact me with your concerns. If your story is already on another archive, still feel free to submit the story here. The entire purpose of this site is to make it easier for Highlander readers to find the stories. There is no other agenda. :-)
To submit your story, you can either e-mail it to me following the formatting suggestions on this page (and including the archive information, or include "Archive: Seventh Dimension" in the headers of the story on a mailing list that I am subscribed to.
Archiving Information
When submitting your story please send me the following (more details below):
*Author(s):
*Title:
*Feedback address:
*Rating:
*If the story is a sequel, what story is it a sequel to?
*Keywords/Comments:
*Character listing:
*Short teaser/summary:
Author(s):
Your name or pen-name as well as the names of any co-authors. If the story is written by multiple authors I need to know I have permission of all authors of the story (each contacting me via e-mail is preferred), and be sure to give e-mail addresses to send feedback to for all authors. It is highly recommended that Authors use a last and first name to avoid confusion, and at minimum add another initial. For example, I go by AnnF as there are multiple Ann's. If you are choosing a pen-name (also highly recommended for new authors, especially those in college who are going to be looking for employment soon), keep in mind that I list all stories on the archive by last name, first name. It is recommended that you check and make sure no one else is using a similar pen name.
Title:
The title of your story. Again if this is a new story, you might check that there are no other stories by the same name, especially if your story is not an X-Over. Having a unique story name will help readers heading to your story via recommendations from others. There is no ban from using a similar or the same title, it's just better if your title is unique.
Feedback Address:
Your e-mail address that you want readers to send feedback to. Please, double-check your typing! And if you do receive feedback, especially positive feedback, it is polite to respond to the sender with a short Thank You note.
Rating: (PG, PG-13, Adult, PG-15 (Slash), Adult/Slash)
Ratings of stories do more than help parents monitor their children's reading. They help readers in choosing the story that best fits the mood they are in to read. Every once in a while I love to pick a PG short story to read before I go to work. When it's late, and I've got time to read I like to choose a longer piece with more complications. Again slash stories must be marked, especially to help readers who like slash to find your story, but also so readers with religious objections will be able to avoid the story. See the Ratings Information page for more detail.
If the story is a sequel, what story is it a sequel to?
This helps readers with the continuity of your universe, as well as tells me how the stories are to be set up on the Series index. If you wish to include information about which episode of either show or which movie your story follows, please include that in the keywords.
Keywords/Comments: (Category, Pairing, X-Over, Content Warnings)
Check out the Terminology page. Remember, all crossover and slash stories must be marked as such.
Categories for each story are optional but very cool. Readers like category information but it is not mandatory as the summary and character listing usually give a pretty good hint as to the type of story. For info on the specific classifications to be used on this site go to the Classifications page linked off the main page. Some examples include: PWP, First Time, AU, Specific Time Frame in regards to one of the series (for example Pre-Archangel) or movies (for example Post-Endgame).
Pairings are to help readers know which characters are romantically involved. For example: DM/M = Duncan & Methos, M/RR = Methos & Richie, DM/A = Duncan & Amanda.
X-Over OtherSeriesNameOrNames - basically just tell me what other TV series or movies the story crosses over with. Without this info the story wouldn't be included in the crossover index. If the crossover has many characters or situations from the non-HL source, then I suggest you might also have it archived in the major archive of that fandom.
Content Warnings these are to help protect you from flamers, and sensitive readers from content they would prefer to avoid at the time they are reading. For example, if someone close to the reader died, the reader might want to avoid stories where characters die, or if the reader is at work on a break he or she would probably not read a BDSM story. These can also draw in readers who say need a cathartic moment, or want to see a character having a little rough fun. Some examples of potential warnings are: Character Death, BDSM, religious figures not being holy, harsh language, extreme violence, rape.
Character listing:
Character listing information is what is used in getting your story cross-referenced in the character indices. The main idea behind the character indices is to help readers, for example, who like Connor to be able to actually find one of the 100 odd stories of the few thousand stories on this archive that include Connor. As such don't include Connor as a character in your character listing if he doesn't have a substantial cameo at least. For the abbreviations used for each character's name see the Character Abbreviation Page. On that page it is also explained that, since I use a database to input the info, if someone had every possible character with an Character index page the listing would read: DM RR CM J M A T DrA C K N Alexa +others
Short teaser/summary:
Summaries and teasers help readers navigate the site more quickly, and can help draw more readers to the story. You want to use this to help give people an idea about what will occur in your story and to include a hook that will convince them to read it. You must provide a summary if you wish there to be a summary, if you need help ask a friend who has read the story, or your beta reader, if you used one. :)
Formatting Notes Please send your stories in text format, with a blank line between each paragraph. Text formatting does not allow for the use of italics or bold face font, so use symbols to indicate your meaning, such as: *bold*, /italics/, _underline_. The important part here is to be consistent. If you are using Word to type your story please turn off automatic formatting before you start to type. If you need directions, e-mail me.
Also, please note that MacLeod is spelled with a capital "L", Richie has no "t", and that Connor is spelled with an "o".
I am subscribed to many Highlander lists, so if you have posted your story to a list I may already have a copy. If you included "Archive: Seventh Dimension" in the headers of the story on a mailing list, and I haven't archived it after 4 weeks or so, please e-mail me. If your story is in html, and you don't know how to convert it, please e-mail me. I try to make it as easy as possible for authors to submit, so talk to me about what is workable for you.
And as always, I am more than happy to discuss any issues you may have.
Please keep in mind I need a week or four, depending on how many stories I've received, to get your story up. :-)
